Children’s Writing Competition

In celebration of this year’s Royal theme, Fairford Festival are inviting children
aged 7-11yrs to submit a short story:

When I was King/Queen for a day

Our judges will be looking for originality, characterisation, good use of language, a good plot and overall, a story that really takes the reader with them.

How to enter

  • Simply download an entry form here
  • Forms will also be dropped at the following schools for distribution:
    – Southrop, Kempsford, Hatherop, Meysey Hampton and Fairford C of E Primary Schools
  • Complete the form and with your short story, EITHER:
    – Take it to 7a Coffee Shop, 7a London St, Fairford and pop it in the entry box (7a are open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm)
    – For those attending the above schools, you can also leave your story and entry form at your school reception for collection on Friday 20th May

Judging and prizes

All entries will be judged by members of the festival committee who will decide on a shortlist. A representative of our sponsor, Paperbackshop.co.uk Ltd, will then select the winner and present the award to the winner.

The winning entry will be announced on Sunday 5th June at 3pm. Those shortlisted will receive a book token each with the winner receiving a very special cup. We will invite all those shortlisted to attend the prize giving.

Rules

  1. The competition is open to all children from aged 7-11yrs
  2. All short stories must have a title and must not exceed 500 words
  3. Please tell us on the entry form if the child has any special educational needs that the judges can take into consideration
  4. The closing date is Friday 20th May 2022. Please note 7a are open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm
  5. There is no entry fee
  6. Only one entry per child
  7. Entries must be based on the topics listed overleaf
  8. Entries will only be accepted with an entry form (available from the Fairford Festival website)
  9. Entries will not be returned so please keep a copy
  10. The judges’ decision is final
  11. The winner will be notified via the contact details provided on the entry form and also announced at the festival on Sunday 5th June
  12. The prize will be awarded in the main tent. This may be subject to change so please check the order of events throughout the weekend or ask a member of the Fairford Festival Crew
  13. Authors of the winning entry grant Fairford Festival the right to publish or broadcast their work though copyright will remain with the author
  14. Entries must only be written in English
  15. Entries will only be accepted with parent or guardian signature
  16. Fairford Festival reserve the right to request proof of age
  17. Original accounts only will be accepted
  18. Any unsuitable or defamatory entries will be rejected
